"She felt a hilt, her fingers banging against the end of Casten’s sword as she grabbed hold and pulled. There was a voice in her mind—a vague hello or a sigh of something coming awake—as the tip of what she held barely rose.

The tip of the sword had lifted only a little when first she’d grabbed it, yet that had apparently been enough for the sword to catch the wolf under its furry throat.

He was using it accurately—to be honest, he appeared to be rather skilled with the thing—yet he was also having to incorporate his whole body, whereas Ash had found the sword to be quite light, so light she’d lifted it with the slimmest of effort."

So...first sword is on the ground? Then she can't lift it? Then it's in doggo's throat? Then she says it's super light? Fine, magic sword won't give up its kill, but is it heavy or not? I'm confused.

How PG of you. ;P

“The Beacon helps us to find those who are dead so we can lead them out,” Amalin said. She looked up at the jewel she carried—now back to being its brightest blue. “The staff I hold wields its power, yet it is the Beacon which gives us Riders our strength. It finds the Pool and pierces the darkest spots in this world when it is not sending the wolves away. However, it does have problems when it finds too much life before it. I am alive, so are you, and standing as close as we were caused the Beacon to fade. You don’t need to be led out of here; you are near to the Unkindness and can use it to find whatever world you once were from. As long as you are not here when the sun sets, you will be fine. I am even sure—”

What the ever-loving eff is going on here? Another word salad of yadayadamagic and stuff plus a guy who can fight off murder wolves single-handedly while apparently having great difficulty with a heavy ass sword. Adrenalin does wonderful things, but simple logic says no, unless he's doing magic.

I enjoy having multiple factions and parties and competing interests. I do. It feels a lot fuller and richer than an otherwise monotone dichotomy (as paradoxical as that may sound). And I'm guessing that Henry is pretty darn loyal to one of these interests. Therefore, he knows more about that party and its allies than he does about some of the lesser stuff. But this Swiss cheesing of knowledge and memories and stuff doesn't work as well here as it does in "In Play" and it's a little frustrating. Not that I want him to suddenly break into monologue about Beacons or whatever while Ash is dying (or not) but I really enjoy the bedtime story drops. Penthya in general got the story going, Syndon was touched on, I expect to meet Isabella (or even if it's her best friend Jeth), and the tidbit about the mirror and the Wiggun was interesting, too, enough to make me hope. And then suddenly BAM! Riders and witches and spells and suddenly this "once-its-broken-its-broken-forever" barrier is restored.

I'm hoping that Ash's treatment/recovery is a nice resting period where some things start getting answered, if only to bring Jeth up to speed on things after six centuries.
